Valentines has always fallen a little short for me. The only time I was truly surprised and made to feel appreciated on that day was when I was 16. I’d wandered past a boy weeks earlier, and we’d gotten talking because he was friends with a friend from my primary school days. We’d shared a milkshake, but not phone numbers, and I’d run off to catch a bus thinking I’d never see him again. Little did I know that my childhood friend would remember my address, and bring that boy to my home with a rose and a valentines card, asking for a date. We just wandered to the park, but it was such a lovely day that we ended up dating until I was 18.
Every year I’m bought back to that, how something that seems so simple and inexpensive was the highlight of my years of Valentines. It was the effort for me.
The stalking? Not so much… but it’s only stalking when you don’t like them, right?
This is a reminder that there are many, many forms of love, and that comes platonically, romantically and familially, along with just having the capacity to accept that you can spread love without it being sexual in nature. Please, try to spread love for February 14th and always. Kindness, compassion and acceptance are ALL love.
